If you’re a new mom on the hunt for natural remedies to help soothe your baby’s teething pain, you’re in the right place. I’m that crunchy mom who didn’t want to use the plastic teething rings or conventional teething gels that stock store shelves.
This post gives you several options that can offer gentle relief without exposing your baby to synthetic chemicals. Let's explore some effective natural teething remedies that you can incorporate into your baby's routine!
1. Teething Drops
Boiron's Camilia teething drops are the easy button both at home and on the go. This homeopathic medicine can be found at Target, your local health food store, and my favorite online grocery store. These premeasured tinctures of flavorless liquid are easily squeezed either directly into baby’s mouth or into baby’s bottle.
2. Breast Milk Popsicles
For breastfeeding moms, breast milk popsicles can be a comforting and nutritious teething remedy. These frozen treats offer a soothing sensation to sore gums while providing baby with the nutritional powers of breast milk. To make breast milk popsicles, simply pour your expressed milk into popsicle molds (like this one) and freeze them until solid.
3. Cold Veggies
Introducing too-big-to-swallow cold vegetables as a teether alternative can help numb sore gums, providing a natural form of relief. This also gets your baby acclimated to the taste and texture of veggies, encouraging healthy eating habits as they transition to solid foods.
Of course, always supervise your baby while they chew on cold veggies to prevent choking hazards.
4. Coconut Oil (+ essential oil)
Organic, cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil (also found on my favorite online grocery store) is a versatile natural product that offers many benefits, including its use as a teething remedy. When mixed with the right essential oil, it can be an extremely effective way to soothe your baby's gums.
Combine approximately 2 oz of coconut oil with 3-5 drops of essential oil to start (you may decide to increase the amount of essential oil at your discretion), and gently massage it onto your baby's gums or along the jaw line. If you don't have the right essential oil, use the coconut oil on its own.
5. Nursing
While teething, your baby may seek to nurse more frequently. Nursing provides a sense of comfort while simultaneously pumping liquid gold with absolute superpowers into baby's system. The physical contact and familiarity of nursing can also have a calming effect on both you and your baby.
6. Teething Necklace
There's a lot of controversy with this one because some people think it's dangerous, others say it doesn't work, and others absolutely swear by it. I used a teething necklace until my baby objected to it (he made his preferences known), and it seemed to help. To ensure safety, make sure the necklace fits properly -- loosely but not to the point of baby being able to get it in his mouth, and don't leave baby unsupervised while wearing it (including sleeping).
7. Environment
Keeping your baby's environment calm and soothing can also make a difference. Consider playing gentle music, using a soft nightlight, or incorporating calming scents like lavender in their room. These elements can help create a sense of tranquility, easing both you and your baby through the teething process.
Comment below and let me know which ones work for you and your baby! I'd love to hear from you.
